Bobotie

Bobotie – Proudly SouthAfrican
Pronounced as “boa-boa-ti” (kinda), a unique and rich combination of mince, spices and egg. Full of flavour and a great kind of I-want-to-go-home comfort food.

I had the privilege to live in Cape Town for over 11 years! What a great city, rich in cultures, rich in nature, what a blessing 🙂
It is one of the best places to get inspired for any culinary journey, Bobotie is a typical Cape-Malay dish. I found this recipe in a book that was given to me; I have added it my own twists.

What you’ll need for 4 persons:
– 500 grams ground beef
– 1 onion, finely sliced
– 2 garlic cloves
– 1 tablespoon curry spices
– ½ tablespoon turmeric powder
– pinch ground cloves
– juice of a lemon/limes
– 2 teaspoons sugar
– 1 egg, beaten
– 2 slices of white bread, soaked in water and drained
– handful of raisins and chopped apricots
– Chopped green chilli

Sauce
-150 mls milk
– 2 eggs beaten
– 2 bay leaves

Fry the sliced onions in some oil until they’re golden.

Combine the mince, spices, garlic, lemon juice, sugar, bread and egg together in a large bowl and mix well.
Add the raisins, apricots and green chilli, mix it once again.

Take an ovenproof dish, grease the sides and add the mince mixture. Even it out and bake for about 40 minutes at 170 degrees Celsius.

Once the mince mixture has gone golden after about 40 minutes, you can make the egg mixture to pour over the hot mince.
Beat the two eggs and add the milk, pour the milk mixture over the mince, add the two bay leaves for even more flavour and bake the dish for a further 10 minutes at 180 degrees to allow it to set and brown.

This is delicious with some basmati rice and a lovely (lekka) sweet chutney!
